A documentary photography course is very different from a controlled photo shoot environment. In this sort of a setup, one has to be open to the idea of ‘emergence’. Let us take you through a few of the insightful and technical ideas of Documentary photography. We will be working with these ideas in our upcoming documentary photography courses.
These courses are rare and innovative. We actually do this sort of photography everyday whenever we take a photo even from our phone. We are in someway capturing a moment in time.
In fact it is this that allows you to document reality as is.
Here are some terms we should understand in this aspect:
- Awareness and acceptance
- Available light
Documentary Photography Courses
We will be talking about each of these aspects in several ways in our documentary photography courses in Bangalore Indiranagar at FLUX.
One cannot make things happen. There is also a stream called observational documentary work. This basically asks you to observe reality and then when something arises or emerges, you can document it. It also asks you to allow reality to compose your frame. But one has to be patient enough to let things emerge. In fact that is what we mean by the idea of emergence.
Awareness and Acceptance
But when the frame becomes alive and emerges, one also has to be aware enough to click it. And when the frame is clicked, one shouldn’t look at it with critical eyes. Rather the beauty of documentary photography is that it is raw and real. It isn’t constructed. Therefore, to accept these small glitches as part of the reality is important too. This is what we want to work on as well.
In fact we would need to replace our romantic aesthetic sense with a more natural one!
Our days are full of sunlight and our nights are full of moonlight. These two natural resources are in a way plenty for us to capture beautiful images. We just need to know how to work with them. Our course will help you understand how to shoot on the streets. Through classes and practical application we will learn how to use natural light as fill light and back light.
One important thing to remember is that you can’t ask the subject of your frame to adjust. As soon as you do that, it is no longer documentary because you have tampered with reality. In stead you can adjust your camera placement or your frame. These are techniques we will work with!
This basically leads us to the idea of ‘Composition’. This is the craft of constructing a frame. Now, you might think that we are contradicting ourselves. Let us explain.
Even though we are trying to document reality, there is an art to document as well. You can decide to keep certain things in your frame and leave certain things out. This means you are composing the frame. It’s just like in painting. The painter paints selected visuals. Same way, you can choose what you want to keep and what not in photographs.
This will be clearer when you do our documentary photography course and practically apply the tools we give you.
Documentary Photography Class
Most often people think that documentary means raw and unaesthetic work. We don’t think. We have seen a lot of work that is documentary and at the same time aesthetically very rich. The credit goes to the eye of the photographer.
We have even seen some great natural pictures of celebrities like Pooja Bhattand Shaheen Bhatt. Right from the generation of Soni Razdan to our new age generation of Alia Bhatt, people like candid photos.
In our documentary photography courses, we also like to help our students realize their strengths and interests. These are the two things that make your career.
When ‘what you like to do’ meets ‘what you are good at’, your career is set!
Best Documentary Photography Courses
That is why we think we are one of the best documentary photography courses! We like the mix of creativity, imagination and logistics. We are skeptic dreamers who allow science and mathematics to converse with arts.
You probably know that the camera works on the principle of how the eyes work. You also know that photography is greatly interlinked with mathematics. And in documentary photography there is an important touch of social and cultural reality. Therefore, documentary photography really brings in aspects from science, mathematics, politics, sociology and arts together. It is a perfectly blended and a well-balanced study process.
A lot of times documentary photographs have also been used to protest. This is a great way of putting your point across. And in today’s world, all you need to distribute and market your work is a social media account!
But to do that, you may want to process your raw image a bit more. Once the moment has been clicked, you may want to spruce it up a bit! This will help you highlight the subject matter of your story. This is why we also have a course and module on photo editing.
Editing a photo basically allows you to choose which story you want to highlight in your photo. We look at each photo as a story. We like this form of interpretative work and we encourage students to be storytellers through their documentary photography.
Importance of Documentary Photography
If you look closely, what you see as mundane is actually very performative and beautiful.
Just imagine a beautiful photograph. The sun rays are kissing the curly hair of a small girl who is eating spicy food on the road.
Doesn’t the description of this image evoke feelings in you? Wouldn’t it be great to have this photo displayed as well? Why don’t you start creating them? Pick up your camera or your phone, go out on the street and document a fragment of time forever!
And if you need necessary technical guidance and skill, come to us and let us create together!
