Drawing with Light: A 12 Hour Photography Workshop in Bangalore Indiranagar at FLUX
Today everything exists to end in a photograph.”
— Susan Sontag
We are offering Drawing with Light: A 12 hour weekend photography workshop in Bangalore Indiranagar at FLUX. The course is spread across 2 weekends, the first batch starts on Saturday, 16 November, 2019, with 3 hour sessions.
Photography is one of the most popular mediums for sharing stories and information. In the words of John Berger “Seeing comes before words”. People tend to trust photographs more than words. When making photographs, one creates a portal to a moment, a memory or an instance in time. We can revisit it repeatedly to learn and discover things about ourselves and our world.
Photographs allow us to document our times, preserve our past, spread awareness and educate us on how we can impact our future. We have a better access to cameras, lenses and sharing platforms now. Therefore it has become very easy for almost everyone to shoot. We are able to record how light interacts with our surroundings and we all perceive it differently. Now anyone can share their photographs, create a conversation and sometimes even trigger a change. In our world, the visual narratives take precedence over written word or speech. Therefore it becomes necessary for one to be able to understand and communicate using the medium effectively.

Maybe you have a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, which you have not been able to use to its full potential. Or else you may simply be someone who wants to explore photography as a means of expression.
Photography Basics
This 12 hour photography workshop in Bangalore Indiranagar at FLUX will familiarize the participants with the basics of the craft and cameras. It will also tell them the nitty-gritties of how to make images and tell stories. We have designed the course to facilitate a holistic/ comprehensive understanding of these concepts. We do it through assignments, exercises, critique, interactions and discussions. Also, we have designed the sessions in a manner to enable learning and interacting with the participants and the facilitator. Therefore to ensure that every participant gets individual attention, we allow only a limited number of participants in one batch.
The most of the first time DSLR / mirrorless camera owners end up not using their gear. In fact they procrastinate making pictures as they find it intimidating to navigate through how to use their cameras. Camera manuals make it seem more complicated than it is. Therefore the course will take the participants through all the basic controls one needs to understand to start making pictures. A brief overview of the history and evolution of cameras and history is also included.
Photography Stance and Techniques
Then this 12 hour photography workshop in Bangalore Indiranagar further enters into the stance and techniques of how to hold the camera to make photographs. This is followed by familiarizing the participants with various compositional techniques. We use these techniques to make photographs and how they affect the way a viewer perceives the image. Hence this will enable the participant to understand how to use the various elements within a frame to add more layers and depth into the scene.
Exercises around the same will also challenge the participants to start seeing, viewing and framing scenes from multiple perspectives. This way they understand how these choices change the way people perceive the image. That is why we provide this exercise for training the eye to see frames and scenes around us. It tells them how they can compose better to communicate more effectively.
Deeper Exploration of Photography
We follow this with a deeper exploration of some technical aspects of putting a photograph together, like exposure, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, metering modes, camera modes etc, and the various camera controls that allow us to play with these. It gives the participant a better understanding of camera controls. This way they are able to understand how to use them to communicate the intended way.
Assignments are designed to explore all these aspects even after the session is over. Hence every session begins with a critique and discussion around the assignments from the previous day. These discussions will help the participants how their peers perceive the images made by them. They will also tell them how the images communicate to the viewer.
Weaving Stories Using Photographs
Once the participants are able to navigate through the basic controls of the camera, we take them through how to weave simple stories using photographs. They undergo various components that go into putting a story together. Each participant has to then put together a simple photo story which will be shared with their peers to gauge if their stories were able to communicate the way they had envisioned.
The aim of this 12 hour photography workshop in Bangalore at FLUX is to equip the participants with skills and knowledge that will allow them to make pictures confidently and use photography to express and voice their thoughts and observations. Hence the course is spread across 2 weekends, the first batch starts on Saturday, 16 November, 2019, with 3 hour sessions every day, along with indoor and outdoor exercises to practice all the basics and get comfortable with using the camera and expressing freely through the medium.
The Facilitator of The Workshop
The facilitator of this 12 hour photography workshop in Bangalore Indiranagar at FLUX, Karthik K Shetty, is a self-taught, freelance photographer and filmmaker. After practicing architecture for a few years, he decided to pursue his hobby, photography, as a profession. Over the last 6 years, he has been involved in a variety of film and photography projects, ranging from campaigns, weddings, events, documentaries, archiving, music videos etc.
Shetty believes that the camera allows him to travel, learn, be a part of, and document events and experiences that he would never have been a part of otherwise. He strongly feels that watching others going about the things they love with their interactions and ways offers us a chance to re-examine our own beliefs. It also enables us to review our practices and biases. It makes us learn, tweak or change them towards being more sensitive and accommodating with those of others. Learning from others’ experiences tends to give us a different perspective; and photography allows us to record these lessons for posterity.
